Tree Tour walks to identify trees and shrubs found throughout our region. Traveling along the natural surface trails at various County parks on selected Thursday evenings in June and July, these free, two-hour walks are open to the public — members of the International Society of Arboriculture will receive two Continuing Education Unit credits for participating in each walk. Led by Park Forestry Supervisor Ben Grossman (an ISA certified arborist and municipal specialist) and his staff of Anton Weinman and Nick Dziuba, the leisurely walks will focus on native and non-native plant species, the environmental landscape of the region, and planting tips. Each week, the walks will travel through a different County park to discuss the natural woodland and forest communities. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite Missouri tree-identification book, Trees of Missouri Field Guide, along with insect repellent, water, and clothing appropriate for the weather and hiking conditions.

St. Peters to celebrate National Night Out

Thursday, July 9th, 2009
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

07.07.2009 6:03 pm

St. Peters residents are invited to participate in the 26th National Night Out on Aug. 4.

The annual event features block parties with the idea that neighbors getting to know one another can help reduce crime. It is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

St. Peters residents interested in hosting a block party should call Police Officer Melissa Doss at extension 550 at either 636-278-2244 or 636-477-6600. Doss tells us she likes to have an officer make an appearance at each party, so she wants to know where the celebrations will be.

Each neighborhood’s party is different. Some feature inflatable play areas, water slides, race cars, dunk tanks and cookouts.

To learn more about National Night Out, call Doss or visit this Web site.

Board views plans for Lakeside 370

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 1:18 AM CDT

St. Peters officials are moving forward on construction plans for the Lakeside 370 Park.

“We’re looking to make sure the park be opened by Oct. 8 or 9 for the Celebrate St. Peters event in 2010,” Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hutsler said.

The Board of Aldermen viewed phase one construction plans for the park during its June 11 work session.

Road and infrastructure construction and work on an RV park and other amenities could begin this fall, said Ted Spaid, co-founder of SWT Design, a St. Louis-based landscaping architecture firm.

“We hope to start bidding the project for construction in August,” Hutsler said.

The recreational park is being developed within the 1,600 acres along Highway 370 that the city bought several years ago. The city eventually sold most of the property to Kaplan Investment and Development Co., Duke Realty and Gundaker Commercial Group for $49.6 million for development of Premier 370, a $570 million business park expected to include office, commercial and entertainment uses.

In the summer of 2006, the city invited the public to suggest amenities for the recreational park. As a result, plans now call for the park to include picnic areas, walking trails, large playgrounds, a camping area and a recreational beach in addition to the RV park.

Designers presented concepts for the 300-acre recreational park to the board during its Feb. 12 work session. At that time, the board voted 7-0 to approve design option B for the Lakeside 370 Park.

In February, Spaid divided the plan into east and west sections. The west side could include an RV park, camping area and public pavilions; to the east, the park could have a public beach, a floating general store and nature area, he said.

Spaid said more than 200 recreational vehicles could be parked in what he called “pods” on designated lots.

During phase one, crews would construct 50 RVs ports, creating two pods of 25, Hutsler said. Comfort stations equipped with showers, rest rooms and a laundry facility would be built between the RV pods, he said.

The park’s centerpiece is a 140-acre lake, which will be available for fishing, boating and possibly swimming. Phase one would include adding a trail around the lake, Hutsler said.

A park ranger check-in station, boat house and boat launch also would be built in phase one, Hutsler said.

Hutsler said it would cost about $6 million to complete the first phase. Five other construction phases could be added, he said.
