Stuck Inside: 5 Indoor Winter Activities for Homeowners

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Here at Payne Family Homes we’re all about getting outside, enjoying nice weather and staying active. But when the freezing temperatures and precipitation have other ideas, we have to adjust accordingly throughout the winter. Trust us—it’s not always easy entertaining kids, pets or even that spouse of yours when you’re all sharing the same space.

So when you’re occasionally “stuck” inside that beautiful Payne home of yours, here are a few ideas on how to entertain in other ways.

  • Channel your inner Emeril. That’s right—you don’t have to be Martha Stewart’s relative to take up cooking as a hobby. With every resource now at your fingertip (Food Network, online cookbooks, etc.), make a point to learn a new meal or snack every week or so. And if you have kids, put them to work—create a “Feed the Family” night where one child cooks for the family. Yes, you can help them if they’re only 10! It’s a great way to bond with your family or loved ones.
  • Have kids? Have a camp-out! Who said you can only camp outside? Turn your living room into your own campground with blankets, games, family movies, and even tents. Suddenly your fireplace is your source for cooking dinner and making s’mores (okay, you can still use the kitchen for dinner). Use your imagination!
  • Everyone has that one room. You know you have it—that one room that needs a cleaning badly. Whether it’s a paint job, a plaster job or even just throwing things out—this is the time to do it. Because once spring rolls around, you’ll have one less room to worry about… and a bit extra time to spend outside in the sun!
  • Stimulate that brain of yours. There are countless ways to keep sharp when trapped indoors. Puzzles, crosswords and online trivia can help you keep mentally fit and entertained at the same time. Pick up that dusty book that’s been under your nightstand for months. And we’re not ignoring TV—watch shows on the History Channel or Discovery Channel if you’d like! No knowledge is useless knowledge.
  • Finally…time to unpack. We know, we know—no new homeowner likes to unpack everything. But what better time than when you’re stuck inside with all of your things? Make it enjoyable with music and snacks, or make it a contest with another friend you know moving in elsewhere. Perhaps the first family or couple to unpack wins a bet (we’re not encouraging gambling… but you get the idea!). Hey, it has to get done sometime, right?

While these are all entertaining suggestions, we want to hear from you! What are some other in-home activities you can use during the cold winter weather?

‘Tis The Season For Payne Home Decorations

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Ah, ‘tis the season in St. Louis.

The holiday season isn’t something that can always be described with words, can it? There is just something about reuniting with family, or even just becoming closer to those around you—on your street, in your neighborhood, around the city—that isn’t always there the other 11 months of the year. The holidays have a way in breeding community and creativity that truly brings people together.

So as the holidays approach, Payne Family Homes wants to share some subtle yet creative holiday decoration ideas that can help bring your entire Payne home together:

  • Rockin’ Around the… Mailbox? Cars will come and cars will go, but the first thing they may notice from the road is a beautifully decorated and/or lit mailbox or light post. A simple mix of evergreen branches and white lights can give off a festive and inviting feel to passersby. Don’t want to wait for the snow? You can even add some of your own, if you’d like!
  • Baby it’s Cold Outside… so we’re not going to be sitting on our bench out there, are we? Instead, use it as a decorative prop for tinsel, red bow, and wintergreen elements (cones, wreaths, etc.) to complement your outside decorations.
  • All I Want For Christmas is… for someone to move that pile of logs out of the front yard. But until then, use those random objects—bushes, logs, etc.—as a source of lighting and decoration (neatly, of course). Get creative and see how you can utilize those objects around your yard!
  • Up On the House Top… are nothing but gutters and shingles. Winterize your roof with beautifully lit icicles and lights across the front of the house to illuminate not only the house, but the yard in general.

These are just a few ways you can visually enhance your home for the holidays. But don’t leave it just up to us—in what other creative ways can you decorate your yard or home for the season?

iPad Winner Photo

Throughout our most recent Facebook contest, Payne Family Homes has received quite an array of answers to the following contest question: “If you could add one room to your home, what would it be?

Some said a play room for their kids. A few pushed for a music room for a baby grand piano. Still others threw out the idea of a man cave with a beer fridge and a secret compartment for their Junior Mints stash (hey, we all can dream, right?).

This contest was a fun and unique way to interact with you and listen to your insights about home design and more. We had a blast reading your creative ideas and the reasoning behind each one. That being said, we are proud to declare Katie Dimmitt as the winner of the Payne Family Homes random drawing and the recipient of a brand-new iPad!

We were thrilled with the amount of responses we received during this giveaway. At Payne Family Homes we take pride in our ability to design homes with unique character, styles and meticulously-designed floor plans. We take the time to learn about our customers and build homes to exceed their individual expectations.

We want to thank everyone for their participation! Continue to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for our updates on everything you need to know about your home. Below are some of our participants’ responses, for your enjoyment:

“If I could add any room to my (imaginary) house I would add a pet hotel room so I could continue to rescue animals off the streets of Saint Louis and give them the loving and safe home they deserve!”

“If I could add a room, it would be a Florida room. To be able to sit looking outside at the seasons over a cup of coffee sounds perfect!”

“…A fully finished Man-Cave in the basement – readily equipped with Kegerator, pool table, and special trophy wall for the newly acquired deer head :)

Thanks again to those whom participated and congratulations to our winner, Katie Dimmitt. We really enjoyed reading everyone’s ideas and are excited about planning our next giveaway. What would you like to see in our next contest? Let us know in the comments section below!

Join Payne Family Homes In Supporting “Toys for Tots” This Holiday Season

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

T4T

As the winter weather slowly makes its way to St. Louis, Payne Family Homes is again supporting “Toys for Tots”, the annual campaign sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Here at Payne Family Homes we consider it a privilege to participate in this nationwide charitable effort.  Our vision of “community” extends far beyond the borders of our residential neighborhoods and this is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate children.

We pride ourselves on building more than just houses.  We create communities where our homeowners can enjoy life, raise their families and build their futures.  The joy “Toys for Tots” brings to less fortunate children seems a particularly appropriate way for us to give back to the greater St. Louis community that has made our success possible.

This is Payne’s second consecutive year with “Toys for Tots”.  Last year we were delighted and impressed by the generosity of our homeowners, vendors, employees and visitors touring our neighborhoods.  With more locations and more owners in residence, we are very excited for this year’s campaign.  We are thrilled to support the “Toys for Tots” program knowing the donations go directly to children in the St. Louis region.

From now until December, the “Toys for Tots” drop boxes will be stationed in the sales centers of all eight of our Payne Family Homes communities in St. Charles and St. Louis Counties.  We ask that donors contribute new, unwrapped toys that will be collected, sorted by age and gender and distributed to needy children in the St. Louis area.

We’re excited to support the St. Louis children and we hope you will join us in making their holiday one to remember.  Simply check out our locations to see which is the most convenient for you!

Payne Family’s Bordeaux Condominiums: HOMEBUYING MADE EASY – AND FUN!

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Meet Bill
Meet “Busch Stadium Bill,” an ardent Cardinals fan, season ticket holder, and proud new homeowner at Bordeaux Condominiums, Payne Family Homes’ easy-maintenance community in Cottleville.

Bill Sanford has spent his entire 32-year professional career in Military Sales. As a retail sales representative for Nestle Food Company, his territory includes major military bases throughout Missouri and Illinois.

The father of three grown children, Bill had lived in a rental condo for the past decade and was ready for ownership again. When not on the road, he basically works from home, so his “shopping list” was very specific, starting with quick access to major highways.

Bill wanted the privacy of a smaller neighborhood and enough square footage to allow for both living and office space – plus his extensive collection of Cardinal memorabilia!

The carefree condominium lifestyle was essential. “I haven’t had to do any outside maintenance for ten years, so this was definitely a factor,” he stated. (And, of course, it gives him more time to indulge his passion for Cards games, workouts at the nearby St. Peters Rec-Plex, and other leisure activities.)

This past spring, the federal first-time homebuyer credit prompted Bill to make his investment. He’d read an ad for Bordeaux, researched Payne Family Homes, and visited the community in March, when the second of seven planned buildings was still under construction.

Purchasing early, Bill was able to select a first-floor unit (also on his “list”) with a fabulous view overlooking Bordeaux’s lake, fountains, and the adjacent Woodlands Sports Park and Tony Glavin soccer fields (another perk, since Bill’s a former soccer player).

Reflecting on his homebuilding experience, he describes community sales manager Lauren Johnson as “fantastic!” “And [superintendent] Bruce Wilson is a super guy – topnotch!” he adds. “I think very highly of him.”

When governmental red tape threatened to delay Bill’s June 30th closing deadline for the federal credit, Payne Family’s general manager, Scott Kerns, stepped in promptly to resolve the issue. “Everyone was just great!” Bill concludes.

Surrounded by autographed baseballs, framed photos of Cardinal greats, and a vast array of other team souvenirs, Bill has been enjoying his new home for three months – where he’s already greeted by neighbors as “Busch Stadium Bill.”

Bordeaux Condominiums is superbly located off Ohmes Road, 1/3-mile west of Mid Rivers Mall Drive. The award-winning community is distinguished by its Tuscan-inspired architecture, and each three-story building consists of only 12 garden-style condominiums.

Payne’s feature-packed 2-bedroom, 2-bath plans provide 1064 to 1257 square feet of living space, and a current promotion offers $10,000 off the base price of any to-be-built home in the third building, now under construction. Sale pricing starts from just $121,400.

Two move-in-ready inventories are also available and sale-priced in the recently completed second building. Both are top-floor homes and showcase a vaulted living/dining area. Another model has been halted at drywall, enabling its future owner to choose all interior finishes.

Covered parking may be purchased, and a modest monthly assessment provides residents with a host of exterior and common area services, including grounds care, snow and trash removal, and maintenance of the lake, fountains, and walking trail.

Bordeaux Condominiums is served by top-ranked Francis Howell schools, and the St. Charles Community College campus is literally within walking distance. For added convenience, Mid Rivers Mall Drive is lined with shopping centers; golf courses are instantly accessible; and the Mall is a mere five minutes away.

Payne Family Homes wants to thank Bill for sharing his story with us! If you are like Bill, and a Bordeaux Condominium would be a perfect fit for you, visit our ‘Contact Us’ tab for more information.

Giving Back to Those Who Give So Much: Military Can Still Buy and Save with Federal Housing Tax Credit

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Created to give those who serve our country all the help they need when purchasing a new home, after they’ve served our country in such an amazing way, we wanted to remind everyone that the government has extended the Federal Housing Tax Credit to all qualified service members.

“Congress recognized that many service members may have missed out on the home buyer tax credit due to being posted overseas,” said National Association of Home Builders’ Chairman Bob Jones, a builder and developer in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. “It is only fitting that they be given another year to take advantage of this opportunity in appreciation of the sacrifices they have made serving our country.”

You have until April 30, 2011 (an additional year) to buy a home and claim the home buyer tax credit, which expired for most Americans on April 30, 2010.

Qualified service members who served on official extended duty outside of the United States for 90 days or more at any time between Jan. 1, 2009, to April 30, 2010, have until April 30, 2011, to place a contract on a home, and until June 30, 2011, to close! Best of all, both the $8,000 first-time and $6,500 repeat home buyer tax credits are included.

“Qualified service members” are defined as a member of the uniformed services of the United States military, a member of the Foreign Service of the United States, or an employee of the intelligence community.

In addition, some of the rules and regulations that come with the Federal Housing Tax Credit are also exempt for military families. The rule that requires buyers to repay the credit if they move out of their home within three years has also been waived for qualified service members if they have to sell their home due to receiving government orders for extended duty service.

So for many military families who are relocating to the St. Louis area after duty, or coming back to the area to reside, Payne Family Homes can help you find the perfect home for your lifestyle. We offer eight fantastic communities in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties featuring AAA-rated School Districts, convenient locations near major thoroughfares, shopping, dining and entertainment, and a variety of distinctive floor plans that are perfect for a variety of lifestyles.

The reasons behind your purchasing decision and how you will live in your home are important to us! Contact Payne Family Homes today and we’ll help you match your lifestyle and budget needs to a community and plan that will work for you. Click the “Contact Us” button at the top of our website or contact our Online Sales Consultant, Kelli Gould, at 314-477-1218 or via email at http://mailto:kag@paynefamilyhomes.com. We really appreciate all that you do for our communities and country and look forward to providing you with a joyful home buying experience!
